Community Research and Partnerships Bridges to improving the dementia care experience and dementia-related caregiving in the African Immigrant community.

African immigrants are a fast-growing segment of the U.S. Black population, but the dementia care needs of this population are not fully understood. The webinar will illustrate how a successful three-year community partnership facilitated African Immigrant engagement in research to create the African MaDE: Memory and Dementia Education, by and for the African Immigrant community.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn about African Immigrant culturally specific recruitment, research findings, and cultural considerations.
  2. Understand how the Community Advisory team developed a culturally tailored dementia education program informed by research and a community pilot to support disseminating a valuable resource toolkit.
  3. Explore the pathway to the creation a community resource booklet that has been tested in the African immigrant community
  4. Learn how the project could create a roadmap for similar projects in other communities across the U.S. and inform conceptualization of the dementia experience and dementia-related caregiving in African immigrants.
