Consider the Caregiver: A deeper look at the realities and impact of being a family caregiver
Family caregivers play an integral role in the lives of family and friends who have been impacted by injury, illness, memory loss and/or cognitive decline related to Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementia.
This role impacts every aspect of the caregiver's life and wellbeing, often turning them into the next patient, and yet their reality often remains unseen and unsupported.

Allison Breininger, BA, MA
Allison Breininger, BA, MA, Founder and Executive Director of The Negative Space, has an extensive professional background as a trainer, coach, content developer and facilitator. A caregiver for her husband since 2010, she has experienced firsthand that caregivers are in the negative space: vital yet overlooked and unsupported.
Fueled by what she saw, Allison created The Negative Space to use her experience and skills to change the way caregivers are seen and supported. Through The Negative Space, she shines light on the realities of caregiving, provides direct services to caregivers, and educates and equips those who support them with concrete tools and strategies. She couples her professional background with her personal journey as a caregiver to bring audiences into the negative space, painting for them a vivid picture of the realities of caregiving.
Allison Breininger and co-host Justin Bajema—both millennial caregivers for their chronically ill spouses—produce the In Sickness Podcast, where they speak honestly about what life is like as a caregiver. Each episode also includes practical ways that supporters can help the caregivers in their lives.
Allison publicly highlights the need for caregiver support, offers clear and simple strategies for those who work with caregivers, and provides content directly to caregivers. She speaks on a wide range of topics for both caregivers and those who can support them. Popular themes include Anticipatory Grief, Realistic Self-Care, and ways to Consider the Caregiver.
